Coursework Details

To complete a PhD in the Learning Sciences area of the Department of Educational Psychology students must complete a total of 54 credits of coursework. 36 credits are needed to qualify for an MS in Education Psychology and admission to the PhD program. Consult the LS Area Requirements for a list courses that are required for admission to the PhD program. The remaining 18 credits of advanced coursework must be completed after admission to the PhD program. These 18 credits are typically elective courses that may be completed as part of your PhD minor. Below is a list of elective courses that students in the Learning Sciences area have taken in the past.

PhD Minor

Prior to admission into the PhD program, students must submit a plan for completing a PhD minor. There are two option for completing a PhD minor, external or distributed.

To complete an external PhD minor, students must complete a minimum of 10 credits in only one department outside of Ed Psych. In addition, a PhD Minor Agreement Form must be approved by a faculty member in the minor department, the student’s primary advisor, and the Ed Psych Department Chair.

To complete a distributed minor, students must complete a minimum of 10 credits outside of Ed Psych (some exceptions may be allowed). These 10 credits may come from one or more departments. Students must also provide a written statement describing the rationale for the proposed program of study. In addition, a PhD Minor Agreement Form must be approved by the student’s primary advisor, and the Ed Psych Department Chair, and the Learning Sciences Area Chair.

The 10 credits required for the PhD minor contribute to the 54 credit total described above.
